Great Lakes Mass Timber Collaborative: A Regional Vision Public Release Meeting

2026 International Mass Timber Conference

March 31–April 2, 2026 | Oregon Convention Center | Portland, Oregon

The 2026 International Mass Timber Conference brings together leaders from across forestry, manufacturing, architecture, engineering, construction, real estate, finance, government, and academia to explore how we can build stronger businesses, better buildings, and a better planet.

As part of the conference, MassTimber@MSU at Michigan State University will host a special session for Great Lakes stakeholders:

Great Lakes Mass Timber Collaborative: A Regional Vision Public Release Meeting

Date: April 2, 2026

Time: 3:30–5:00 p.m. PT / 6:30–8:00 p.m. ET

Location: Oregon Convention Center and online via Zoom

Cost: No cost to attend. Registration required.

This session marks the public release of “Great Lakes Mass Timber Collaborative: A Regional Vision,” a document that outlines the context, shared vision, and next steps for advancing a connected, strategic mass timber ecosystem across the U.S. Great Lakes region.

The Collaborative began in 2024 with the recruitment by MassTimber@MSU of leads from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and New York. These leads recruited participants from across the mass timber value chain in their states who convened first online and then in person  in Detroit in October 2024 to explore what a thriving regional mass timber economy could look like. Pennsylvania participants have  since joined the collaborative. Kathryn Fernholz of Dovetail Partners has been the lead from Minnesota for the effort and continues to commit leadership capacity to the initiative.

A draft Vision was presented at the 2025 conference. Following that presentation, the vision has been refined with stakeholder feedback, and involvement has expanded to include partners from Pennsylvania. With this growth, the effort now provides for complete representation of the U.S. Great Lakes states.

This initiative is just getting started, and the April 2 session offers an opportunity to learn more, connect with regional partners, and help shape what comes next.

If you are planning to attend the conference or would like to join virtually, we encourage you to register and consider participating in this important regional conversation.
