Kathryn Fernholz will present on a panel at the 2024 AISES National Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The workshop titled "Creating Sustainable Indigenous Designs with Mass Timber" is on October 4th from 9:30am - 10:20am in room 214B.
Session Description:
Architects create designs for the built environment, while considering the natural environment, community values, and climate change. This moderated panel will focus on three aspects important to climate resilient design. Susan will describe the collaboration with the Maidu tribe in California, to design and build a new Roundhouse Council Youth Education Center. Built out of lower-carbon and carbon storing mass timber, the project is directly inspired by indigenous models of Maidu community structures in California. Janelle will connect low embodied carbon materials such as mass timber to the sustainable built environment. Building with mass timber lowers global warming potential and decreases the risks of climate change for future generations. Katie will present the importance of Tribal Forests, forest management and the opportunity that innovative materials like mass timber can provide. Tribal forests and the products and services they provide offer career opportunities that connect science, climate resiliency, and community values.
